Spraywatch: A Beautiful Rescue.
(a Musical)
Hello.
You’re about to see the first step of testing a new musical in development. A stand up ‘sing/read through’. This will be like a music recital, with some extra surprises. The first act is a lot longer than the second. Please have a wee before the first. And the second. If you want to.
We have a few things on here for you. Information about the show, cast and production team (your ‘programme’), ways to support its development, and a survey. Please fill in the survey after the show, not in the interval. Or just sit back and enjoy this.
Thanks for coming. It means a lot.
About the Show.
It’s 1995, and Santa Monica is bright and beautiful. However, everyone’s favourite lifeguard Pam, like a prawn or dolphin, a princess of the surf, is hooked, flown and plopped upon the promenade of ‘Spray’ – a grey and wet miserable town in Britain. The promise of a promotion to ‘manager of a beach’ soon becomes the harsh reality of cultural differences and approaches to everything from swimming, to recreation. (Pork scratchings). As a dark and sinister underbelly begins to emerge, Pam must confront her own ideas about positivity and beauty to save others and herself, or y’know, maybe she won’t. Perhaps she’s fine as she is, and is absolutely not heading for an iceberg. This is a darkly comic, alternative musical. A stand-up read-through/sing-through that will have you laughing and crying. Adults only; expect something between Barbie, Book of Mormon, and Elbow.
Meet the Cast.
.
We think they’re pretty great. Even after hearing their weird water-related stories…
ABBIE: “I got my family on jet skis. I massively underestimated how fast they can go, and Dad suddenly appeared in my path. I panicked and tried to use the brakes, but instead accidentally twisted the handles the wrong way and sped up. I managed to swerve out the way in the last second, but not before sending a large wave his way, knocking him off his jet ski, and traumatised him for life. He’s not coming to watch this.”
ALEX: “In shocking similarity to one of my characters, I was swept out to sea in a kayak and had to be rescued by a life guard.
In shocking similarity to my other character, I got hypothermia falling asleep in a rubber ring.”
PHIL: “I unknowingly, regularly, swam in croc infested waters. I used to go swimming at a local beauty spot when I was at college. Went back years later to visit and it was blocked from the public. Upon enquiry it was because there had been a crocodile incident. Crocodiles are scared of Sandra.”
ROB: “I was my own lifeguard once. I fell off the back of a boat on holiday and saw the propeller coming towards me. I skilfully swerved out of the way, which offset being an idiot for falling in in the first place. I knew then I was born to one day play a part involving a makeshift propeller.”
NATALIE: Despite nearly being drowned by her dad on a family holiday, weapon: upturned banana boat, (Denise would have a field day). The sea is actually Natalie’s happy place.
BEKAH: “I nearly drowned on a solo holiday in the Philippines. But luckily due to my lifeguard experience playing Rose, I survived.”
NIGE: “I once sneaked a canoe into Radcliffe swimming baths, with a friend. It’s a B&M now.
I also got barred from Ramsbottom swimming baths for violently shaking a vending machine because my skips got stuck.
And I went crabbing in Rhyl once and hated it.”
LEONIE: “I went on an excursion to Pablo Escobar’s island. The final hurdle was a leisurely swim to the shore surrounded by my friends, the fish. I can’t swim resulting in a fight for my life. I won.”
TOM: “As a conductor I need to use my arm. It’s insured for a million pounds. However, water once nearly took it. I was in a jacuzzi and a vent sucked itself onto my arm. I could not extract it. The hideous vortex of death made me fear inevitable amputation and loss of career. They switched it off and it was ok.”
